The topic of mental health will be highlighted in a special virtual appearance in North Battleford this month.

Former Humboldt Broncos coach, Chris Beaudry will be speaking about the importance of mental health on a Dekker Centre livestream March 25, at 3 p.m.

Beaudry, who was an assistant coach with the 2017-18 Broncos team who were tragically involved in the bus crash that killed 16 players and staff, has since been heavily involved in the field of mental health and healing.

In addition to helping to create the first online mental wellness course for students, Beaudry is also currently working with the Canadian Mental Health Association in a peer support role and facilitates a grief sharing group.

The event will be sponsored by Hawtin Plumbing Services, Maunula Electric, and the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group.

Managing owner with Hawtin Plumbing, Kelli Hawtin said she and her husband, Mitch, actually first saw Beaudry on a Facebook Live event. They had originally intended to bring him in to speak to their staff before partnering with other local organizations to open it up further to the community as well, as part of the Dekker Centre Presents series.

“Mental health is really important all the time, but it is especially important right now for our staff and everyone, just with everything going on and the world changing so much,” Hawtin said. “We all have different situations and circumstances, so to be able to make it something even bigger that the whole community can be involved with was just a no-brainer.”

Jaime Maunula with Maunula Electric added that, for both individuals and businesses in the area, it offers a chance to shine a light on the importance of mental health and maybe even start a conversation.

“I think this is a really unique opportunity for the Battlefords and I hope that a lot of the businesses and organizations take advantage and involve their staff in it and begin some of the really important conversations that should be happening,” she said.

Program director with the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group, Nic Fransoo said the radio station is pleased to partner with other community-focused organizations to be able to help provide valuable programming for residents of the area during this time.

“We were approached by Maunula Electric and Hawtin Plumbing and Heating Services, two great community-minded businesses, that looked at the situation we’re faced with over the last year and saw our community needs a pick-me-up and somebody to help get that message out there,” Fransoo said.

“I’m really looking forward to what Chris can tell us about his experience because from other’s experiences we can rise, and he’s willing to share that with us and that means a lot,” Fransoo added.

The Chris Beaudry livestream will be available via ‘pay what you can’ donation. For more information or to register, contact the Dekker Centre or find them on Facebook.
