‘It’s like winning the Oscars’: Melfort Lawyer receives Queen’s Counsel Designation

A Melfort lawyer has been honoured with the Queen’s Counsel Designation in Saskatchewan.

Foluke Laosebikan received her designation in February and says it’s special to be honoured with something like this.

“Most importantly, just a sign that one’s work is regarded by one’s colleagues,” she said.

Laosebikan operates FLK Law Firm in Melfort, and was admitted to the bar in 2011. Recently, she was also named the President of the Law Society of Saskatchewan in December. Laosebikan told northeastNOW it’s overwhelming with everything happening all at once but it’s very surreal.

With her new Queens Counsel Designation, Laosebikan said she hopes those who see that honour are inspired to succeed.

“What my hope really is that in whatever areas we all are planted, that we may bloom there,” Laosebikan siad. “It may not even be in the legal profession.”

Laosebikan added that with her firm, it’s different than most in that she doesn’t spend a lot of time in court, but practices in what she is passionate about, finds fulfillment and can make the biggest impact.

She hopes everyone is able to find their niche in whatever they do.

“The sky is big enough for every star that wants to twinkle and to shine,” she said.

While she’s not the first female President of the Law Society, Laosebikan said it’s still great to see women continue to be honoured and recognized for what they do.

Laosebikan also said that she’s proud to be living in Melfort and is grateful for all the people who live in the city.

The Queen’s Counsel appointments are based on recommendations from a committee consisting of a number of judicial people including the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, past presidents from the Canadian Bar Association, and the Law Society of Saskatchewan, and many others.
