Raiders colder than ICE after being shutout

Apr 2, 2021 | 7:01 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders got an injection of energy and skill before Friday’s game, as star forward Ozzy Wiesblatt returned just one game removed from what seemed to be a serious injury. And overage goaltender Max Paddock also took to the crease after a four-game absence due to a lower-body injury.

But it still wasn’t enough to get the win. With just five defencemen available for the game, the ICE shutout the Raiders fell 3-0. Gage Alexander made 31 saves for the shutout for the ICE.

During their three-game losing streak, the Raiders have scored just once and have been outscored 14-1 in that span. And as Raider head coach Marc Habscheid pointed out after the game, the Raiders will be in last place if they lose to the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday at 8 p.m.

“Okay, this is whatever, 24 games and the Ed Chynoweth is not going to be awarded this year, but this organization—we’ve built a lot of pride in what we do, and how we play, and the fact that we win,” Habscheid said. “If Swift Current beats us tomorrow, we’re in last place. And that does not work for the Prince Albert Raiders. Not a chance. Under no circumstances does that work. It’s just not good enough.”

In the first period, it looked like the Raiders were going to have an early advantage.

It seemed like Wiesblatt made an immediate impact on the game, as he danced through the ICE defence in the third period and his backhanded shot snuck through ICE goaltender Gage Alexander and into the net. But WHL official Mike Langin immediately waved off the goal, a ruling that stood after a brief video review.

“He blew it, he knew it. He blew the whistle too early,” Habscheid said. “It should’ve been a goal, but that didn’t change the way the game was going or the effort or the compete effort, at all.”

The turning point of the game came 1:46 into the second period, when Raiders rookie Dallyn Peekeekoot was ejected from the game. Peekeekoot received a five-minute major for charging on ICE assistant captain Jakin Smallwood, who was in a vulnerable position after delivering a pass.

Habscheid disagreed with the major call and thought Peekeekoot’s hit was legal.

“It was a great hit. The guy watched his pass, he passed it and watched it,” Habscheid said. “[Peekeekoot’s] shoulders were down, his arm was down, his feet were planted, it was a clean hit.”

Even though they took a minor penalty during their five-minute power play, the ICE still managed to score twice on the long man advantage. Cole Muir tipped in the first, while Owen Pederson buried the rebound on the second.

King of the Hil

For three of the last four games, the Prince Albert Raiders have dressed only one goaltender. The Raiders may not have to face that situation again for a while as they signed 2004-born goalie Max Hildebrand to a WHL Standard Player Agreement before Friday’s game. They immediately added him to their current roster and Saturday’s lineup against the ICE, as he backed up starter Max Paddock. Carter Serhyenko played all of the last four games for the Raiders to relieve the-then injured Paddock. He was given Friday off.
