Nachbaur’s ‘Gordie’ and Peekeekoot’s first lift Raiders over Broncos
After a disappointing 3-0 defeat to the Winnipeg ICE on Friday, Prince Albert Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid called out all of his veteran players and said he wanted to see a lot more from his experienced group of players.
Justin Nachbaur heard his coach loud and clear, as Nachbaur had a Gordie Howe hat trick in the first period to lead the Raiders (4-6-1-1) to a 4-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos (3-8-1). The win snaps a three-game losing streak.
Nachbaur got his assist on the Raiders’ first power play of the night, as his low shot was deflected off of Raider rookie Dallyn Peekeekoot and into the net for Peekeekoot’s first WHL career goal. Nachbaur then ripped home a point shot on a one-timer from Ozzy Wiesblatt for his goal. Then, Nachbaur capped off the ‘Gordie’ with a scrap with Broncos’ big man Kaleb Bulych, after Bulych hit Raider rookie Logan Linklater hard into the glass.
“That’s obviously pretty special,” Nachbaur said about his goal, assist and fight all in the opening frame. “It was a good pass by Ozzy [Wiesblatt], Peeks scored his first, that’s awesome. And I like to play a physical game, that’s what you have to do sometimes.”
