Another graduating Melfort Mustangs has committed to post-secondary hockey.

Forward Leighton Burns-Marion has committed to Concordia University Wisconsin for the 2021/2022 season.

The Regina product came to Melfort in the 2020 offseason in a trade with the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). In three games with the Mustangs, Burns-Marion went pointless and had four penalty minutes.

“We acquired Leighton because of his size speed and skill. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see him perform much as a 20-year-old but he definitely has lots of positive aspects to his game.” Mustang Head Coach and GM Trevor Blevins said in a release. “He’s going to a great program with Concordia and we wish him all the best with his academic and hockey career.”

Prior to his time in Melfort, Burns-Marion played two full AJHL seasons with Calgary, scoring eight goals and adding five assists in 92 regular season games. He added a goal and an assist in the three games during the 2018/2019 playoffs with the Canucks.

Burns-Marion also spent three years honing his craft in the Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL). He played 128 games for the Notre Dame Hounds and Regina Pat Canadians, tallying 34 points. He also had one assist in seven playoff games with Regina in 2017/2018.

There was also some local connection with the northeast region for Burns-Marion as he played his first season of U15 AA hockey with the Northeast Wolfpack in 2013/2014. It was a team that included former Melfort Mustangs Tyson Meyers, Nolan Kadachuk and Jake Misskey.
