Wilkie uses Hockeyville funds for new ice plant

The Town of Wilkie announced Wednesday they will be installing a new ice plant at the Saskcan Community Centre rink this summer.

Wilkie was a top-four finalist for Kraft Hockeyville in 2019, and along with their finalist winnings from the event, also received donations from the community, including Brett Wilson and the Nelson family.

The total cost of upgrades this summer which include a new chiller and new pumps for the new brine system will be approximately $126,000.

The removal of the old system is currently underway with the new ice plant expected to be installed by mid-June. A release from the town states that the new system will allow them to run operations much more efficiently, heading into a hopeful return of the hockey season come the fall.

“We’re just so excited we can use the funds from the 2019 winnings and get our ice plant up to fully-functional and have a rink that’s going to be well-equipped and well-maintained for years to come now,” Helen Urlacher, said.

Urlacher, who has been integral in spearheading the town’s Hockeyville bids through the years, said hockey games at the local rink play a valuable role in the community.

“Hockey is a huge part of this town, and for the community, [the new ice plant] is going to really secure a facility for future generations to come once we’re allowed to get back into the rink,” she said. “That first game back is going to be so amazing and I’m getting goosebumps right now thinking about it.”
