Meadow Lake RCMP gang suppression initiatives lead to arrest of attempted murder suspect

Gang suppression-focused initiatives implemented by the Meadow Lake RCMP have led to the arrest of a man wanted for attempted murder.

On April 15, the Meadow Lake RCMP, along with the Emergency Response Team, arrested Jonathon Iron inside of a residence located at Carter Place. Authorities stated any loud noises heard by residents during the incident did not come from any firearms. The noises were reportedly a part of a controlled tactic used to safely execute the arrest.

At the beginning of the year, the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment shifted its focus toward reducing gang activity with assistance from provincial support units including Traffic Services and North Battleford General Investigation.

S/Sgt. Ryan How stated the Meadow Lake RCMP has also seized numerous weapons over the recent months including guns, Tasers, bear spray, batons and machetes, along with thousands of dollars of cash and illegal narcotics. He added the RCMP has laid serious criminal charges on many suspected gang members with many of them being held in custody or subjected to probationary conditions.

“There’s been a notable decline in firearms offences in the city,” How said. “The Meadow Lake RCMP acknowledges that there is still a lot of work to be done as gun and gang violence continues to create extremely dangerous situations, as was seen in the event at the business on Railway Avenue on April 13.”

How stated the assistance from the public has proven to be an effective asset to local enforcement. He reiterated gun violence is unacceptable and that the Meadow Lake detachment is committed to making the community feel safe again.
