Police report spike in property crime, encourage residents to be extra vigilant

The Prince Albert Police Service has created a special task force to address property crime.

The measure was taken in direct response to a recent spike in numbers. There were 243 reported incidents in March; roughly 80 more than the same month last year. Police Chief Jon Bergen said police adapt to changing trends to help deter future crimes from happening.

“It’s a swing shift team of patrol members and they are looking at different events and following the investigation as thoroughly as possible,” he said.

The majority of incidents last month were related to mischief and wilful damage (91), but there were also 24 vehicle thefts, 24 fraud incidents, and 78 incidents involving theft under $5,000. Bergen reminded residents the best way to prevent crime is to remember to keep everything locked up, and to make use of motion sensor lights and cameras. He also encouraged people to report any suspicious activity.

“When we have the information and know what occurred, it definitely helps us,” he said. “Sometimes we recover property that we believe to be stolen and if it’s not reported, we can’t track it back to the owners.”

A similar initiative was done in 2019 and yielded great results. The temporarily assigned suppression team, consisting of one sergeant and three constables, solved 21 cases over a month period. Fourteen people were charged and six possession of stolen property criminal charges were processed.

Chief Bergen discusses what residents can do to deter crime.
