Jury selection no longer required for Starblanket murder case

May 5, 2021 | 3:00 PM

A man facing a charge of second-degree murder has re-elected to be tried by judge alone.

Silas Starblanket was originally scheduled to be tried by a jury last month, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, all scheduled jury trials in the province have been getting postponed.

The courts have offered individuals the choice to re-elect to help speed up their matters.

Starblanket’s case was discussed during a short hearing Tuesday afternoon at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench.

In August 2019, 19- year-old Evander Sanderson, was stabbed multiple times in Prince Albert’s midtown area and later died in hospital.

The court case has been adjourned for a pre-trial hearing, which will take place later this month. It’s not known if a new trial date will be set at that time.
