A wildfire is burning in the Candle Lake area but officials said there was no immediate risk to the public.

Highway 913 has been closed.

The fire was reported around noon near Heritage Lake.

Candle Lake fire chief Wes Harker told paNOW he had spoken with provincial officials and the wind was blowing it in an easterly direction towards White Gull Lake and “away from assets.” He said the fire had jumped across Highway 913. The public should avoid the area.

Earlier Terry Kostyna, the mayor of Candle Lake, said local fire crews were on standby if needed.

“All our firefighters have been alerted and if there’s an issue we’re ready to go,” he told paNOW.

At least one witness said a bird dog aircraft flew over around 2 p.m. and shortly after two bombers came over.

The witness said they had been steadily working the blaze and there was no significant wind in the area.
