St. Brieux school students bring home multiple YBEX awards

For the 20th year, Community Futures Newsask in Tisdale dispersed the Youth Business Excellence (YBEX) awards.

The awards ceremony was cancelled for the second year in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic but students were still able to submit their work for prizes and recognition.

The competition gives participants an opportunity to explore Entrepreneurship as an option to learn about starting their own business.

There were 15 individuals or groups students from the St. Brieux School that won an achievement or award.

Vice Principal Jeremy Rolheiser told northeastNOW he was very proud to see the success of his students this year.

“Our participating Grades 10, 11, and 12 students won all of the awards in that category,” Rolheiser said.

Rolheiser teaches entrepreneurship at St. Brieux School and said he has encouraged his students to take part in this competition for many years now.

“It gives them some real-life experiences. It helps to raise the profile of our school, students, and community in a positive way,” Rolheiser said. “It also looks great on our students’ resumes as they prepare for post-secondary education and students love the chance to earn some money.”

The winners received cheques ranging in value from $150 up to $350.

YBEX has been in the past, and continues to be, important for students across the region, Rolheiser said.

“This program is very important in promoting entrepreneurship and small business in the northeast,” he said.
