Northlands College celebrates 21 ABE graduates

Jun 9, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Northlands College held a virtual graduation ceremony Wednesday to honour 21 graduates from the adult basic education (ABE) program.

The ceremony included several guest speakers such as Lt. Gov. Russell Mirasty, Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Gary Vidal and Cumberland MLA Doyle Vermette. It also included remarks from Elder-in-Residence Elie Fleury, who talked about how COVID-19 has changed the way education has been delivered during the last two years.

“I congratulate you. You have done a great job,” Fleury said. “You have achieved what you set out to do and now you set out on the next phase of life and, with your desire and commitment, I know that you will do well. I know that. You have that desire. You have that commitment. Just keep telling yourself ‘I can do it.’”

There were three valedictorians representing each of the Northlands College campuses in northern Saskatchewan. They are Lisa McCallum from Buffalo Narrows, Nadine McDermott from Creighton and Taylor Natomagan from La Ronge.

Throughout the virtual ceremony, graduates were introduced one at a time and were given a moment to say some words and have a loved one or friend hand them their diploma.

The adult basic education class of 2021 from the Buffalo Narrow campus are Keygan Coe-Piche, Dustin Gardiner, Karl Halvorsen, Lisa McCallum and Wendy Piche.

Those from the Creighton campus are Tammy M. L. Ballantyne, Eric Custer, Krista McCallum, Nadine McDermott and Kaylee Wollenhaupt.

The graduates from the La Ronge campus are Stacey Bradfield, Destiny Forest, Kayla Halkett, Steven Lariviere, Kellie Morin, Taylor Natomagan, Kiefer Patterson-Bird, Carrie Roberts, Cheyenne Sanderson, Larry Sinclair and Helen Smith.
