Families take to the streets for MMIWG walk

Jun 15, 2021 | 12:14 PM

A group of supporters took the streets of North Battleford Monday evening for a walk to raise awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

Connie Beauchene who organized the event walked in memory of her niece Courtney Johnstone and all others who are missing or have been murdered.

Johnstone was murdered in Grande Prairie in 2014.

“There are too many Indigenous girls that are going missing now, way too many,” Beauchene said. “We notice it. And it needs to be stopped.”

Krista Fox, spokesperson for the family of missing North Battleford woman Ashley Morin of Ahtakakoop Cree Nation, walked with Morin’s mother Diane.

“We wanted to support Connie [Beauchene],” Fox said. “Most importantly we want to remind people in our community that Ashley is still missing.”

A third annual three-day walk to raise awareness about Ashley Morin is planned from July 9 to 11, from the Saskatoon Police Station to North Battleford.

“If people want to come out and show the family your support that would be amazing,” Fox said.

In 2022, Fox will embark on a walk across Canada for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.
