Shoes to be hung on Muskoday Bridge on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Jun 21, 2021 | 11:29 AM

A well-known piece of regional infrastructure will take on a very different and somber look as National Indigenous Peoples Day is recognized.

Muskoday First Nation will be tying 215 pairs of shoes to the bridge over Highway 3.

The powerful memorial is being done in light of the recent residential school findings in Kamloops, B.C.

There will be increased foot traffic on the bridge as organizers work creating the powerful display. The area will be monitored for safety and drivers are asked to use caution in the area.

Organizer Ronalda Vandale started hanging the first pair of shoes on Monday morning, while the final one is set to be hung by Chief Ava Bear at 2 p.m. There will be a public ceremony to follow.

The organizers have been getting donations of children’s shoes for the memorial and they have been asking for more. They’ve thanked the community for their support as well as Sask Highways for allowing the event to take place.
