Battlefords local Tim Popp has been recognized as a recipient of the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.

One of just 26 individuals across the province to receive the honour, Popp will be presented his medal from Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Russ Mirasty at a virtual ceremony that will be aired July 1 at 10 a.m.

A familiar face to many in the community, Popp has volunteered with the Royal Canadian Legion since 1982, and currently serves as vice-president of the Battleford Branch. He also helps document military history through the Maple Leaf Legacy Project and as firearms and military advisor to the Fred Light Museum, while also researching incidents and acts of bravery for the Royal Canadian Humane Association, among his charitable and volunteer work.

Popp called it ‘a special honour,’ to receive the award, adding that for him, it’s just about helping out where he can.

“I was quite honoured, [though] I wasn’t thinking anyone was going to nominate me, you just want to try to help the community out as much as you can,” he said. “There are always organizations that need help to promote what they stand for and can only survive if people step up and offer to help out in whatever capacity they can.”

Now retired, Popp spent just over 30 years in public service, split between the military and RCMP. Over 26 of those years were spent as an RCMP officer in Saskatchewan, as he was posted twice in the Battlefords, in addition to serving in the Unity and Nipawin communities.

President of the Battleford Legion Branch #9, Esther Delainey said she couldn’t say enough about Popp’s work behind the scenes, helping to organize events and serve the community as part of the organization for nearly 40 years now.

“Tim [Popp] is our first Vice President, and I call him my right-hand man,” Delainey said. “He’s helped organize the placing of some plaques at the Battlefords cemetery for Remembrance Day and he really knows his history as a historian, and we appreciate all he does for us and this community.”

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers honours individuals who have demonstrated passion, dedication and commitment to their communities through significant, sustained and unpaid voluntary contributions. Whether through the arts, organized sports, youth and community organizations, or addressing social issues, their achievements include long-term, significant fundraising or lifetime dedication to service within community organizations.

The July 1 ceremony where Popp will receive his award will be broadcast on the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan website, available here.
