Battlefords local, Tom Hawboldt has been recognized for his commitment and dedication to school and community sport, with a Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) Service Award.

Hawboldt, who has spent the last six years as a retired superintendent and current consultant with the Light of Christ Catholic School Division (LOCCSD), served as a teacher and manager of information and technology within the division for over 20 years, including 12 at North Battleford’s John Paul II Collegiate (JPII).

During that time he also contributed a number of extra hours coaching and assisting with running various extra-curricular athletic teams in both the Battlefords and surrounding region.

Athletic Director at John Paul II Collegiate (JPII), Vic Stynsky said Hawboldt has remained very in-touch with the Crusaders’ athletics department even once moving on to serve as a member of the Light of Christ school board, making regular trips back to stay involved with the school teams.

“Tom [Hawboldt] has been a leader in LOCCSD and a positive role model for many coaches,” Stynsky said. “As a Superintendent, Tom was supportive and cooperative when it came to school extra-curriculars and athletics, and through his leadership he expanded and continued the Coach Appreciation Program which recognized Coaches and their time involved in extra-curricular activities.”

Hawboldt has been involved with coaching high school athletics for over 32 years, including over a decade at the helm of senior basketball teams, badminton teams, and outdoor pursuits programs in the division. Hawboldt has also been involved behind the bench with both soccer and football among other sports.

Also serving as a member of the Battlewest Athletic Association as the division rep for the last six years, Stynsky said Hawboldt’s dedication to the school and community athletics programs speak for itself, making him a worthy selection for the Service Award.

“Tom has been a vital part to the building and success of Athletics at John Paul II and has been a loyal supporter for the Battle West Athletic Association,” Stynsky said.

“He’s been a driving force in many different sports initiatives in the Battlefords, and his commitment, dedication, and sports knowledge has guided his teams to success.”

Outside of his work in the schools, Hawboldt has also been very present in community athletics and events as well. He has served as a member of the Saskatchewan Winter Games host committee, mission staff for the Winter Games in Melville, Summer Games’ sports chair for mountain biking, and a member of the Battlefords/Sask Cycling Club and Cross Country Ski Club, while also running for the Sask. Party.
