Carrot River’s Main Street improvements expected to cost $992,000

This summer’s work to improve Main Street in Carrot River is now estimated to cost a lot more than originally expected.

The estimated total cost of the project was originally $825,000, but the expected cost is currently $992,000.

“It all comes down to supply and demand,” town administrator Brennan Hall said. “The demand is through the roof. We’ll do it right the first time instead of going for the cheaper option and then have to repair it in two years. We would spend more money that way. We want it to last longer.”

Work on the road, sidewalks, curbs and gutter is scheduled to start next week.

“The biggest things are safety and how we want our town to look,” Hall said. “It’s not going to be a complete replacement of absolutely everything. The sidewalks, curbs and gutter are basically going to be spot replacements where it’s the worst. That’s been a long time coming. Some portions of the road will be milled down where it’s better.”

Town council authorized Hall and Mayor Roman Charko to sign an application for a $200,000 term loan for the work at a special council meeting July 13. The loan is at a fixed rate for five years.

“We might not need this $200,000,” Hall added. “It’s there if we need it. We’re sitting in a comfortable position.”

Council also accepted Paramount Paving’s tender of more than $1 million at the meeting. Paramount Paving is the only company who applied.

“We’re still waiting on their timeline and game plan and what portions they’re going to start with,” Hall said. “These guys were the only people that had an opening. We had to pay the price to get them with their busy schedule. We were hoping for multiple offers. A lot of contractors right now are completely booked.”
