The popularity of the Amazing Race on TV has opened up a world of possibilities for the City of Melfort.

Their Amazing Race Melfort event had teams travelling all over the city in search of clues and activities.

The winning team received the honour of deciding which local charity received the registration fees collected from the event.

Shannon Marshall, Recreation and Aquatics manager with the city, said the winning team has decided to donate the funds to the North East SPCA with Modern Flare topping off the donation with an additional $100. The sponsorship from local businesses also ensured that every team got to take home a prize as well, she said.

Ten teams of four competed in 10 different challenges across the city and Marshall told northeastNOW that she was happy to see a wide range of people, from young to older adults and seniors, competing.

“We just wanted a fun day. We wanted an event that reach all age demographics and we did. We had everybody.”

The museum team would be the ones to also take home the prize for best dressed team coming to compete in full turnout museum gear advertising what visitors could come see at the Melfort and District Museum.

Getting people out into the community to have some fun was the main goal of the event, said Marshall, and for some people, it was visiting places and trying new things that they haven’t had a chance to.

The Co-op Community North Park is not a place that everyone in the city has visited yet since its creation a few years ago so hosting a challenge there gave participants and volunteers an opportunity to visit the fairly new space.

Four local organizations also volunteered to host a challenge at their locations, including the Melfort Public Library, the Melfort and District Museum, TJ’s Pizza, and the Melfort and District Fire Department.

While they would have loved to have seen more people cheering on the teams, Marshall said having the participants and volunteers out supporting this event was great to see and the challenges were cool to watch.
