Camaraderie and golf in Humboldt as EMS hosts sixth annual tournament

After not being able to get out on the links last year, the Humboldt EMS golf tournament is once again hitting the Humboldt Golf Course.

Registration is open for the sixth annual event on Sept. 9.

Humboldt fire chief Mike Kwasnica said they would want numbers for catering before Sept. 3 but are willing to take teams after.

“We do have some good feedback already on people that are going to be coming out and supporting this golf tournament so we’re hoping that if nothing else people just come out and have fun,” Kwasnica told northeastNOW.

While the event is for everyone to have fun. it is also an opportunity for people living and working in the Humboldt area to get out and meet and talk with emergency service members from the Humboldt and District Fire Department, the Humboldt and District Ambulance, and the Humboldt RCMP.

Humboldt’s EMS are unique in the way they operate. While Kwasnica doesn’t always see how special the relationship is between the three services, he has been told several times over the years that not every community has the same camaraderie between their services.

“It’s actually rarer than we thought when all three agencies get along as well as we do,” Kwasnica said. “For us, it’s just been a normal thing, and we try to keep that relationship open when new members move in, and we try to open it up. Especially when we go on to big scenes or something, we work really well together.”

The event is a fundraiser for local causes but Kwasnica said they have not chosen their fundraising destination as of yet. Usually, they try to find gaps in the community where people are trying to raise money for certain projects. Previous fundraising efforts by the Humboldt EMS have contributed to the school zone speed indicators, said Kwasnica.

“If it was not budgeted for someplace else, then we can maybe help fill that safety portion of our community.”

The $90 registration fee covers 18 holes of golf, cart, supper, and a pre-tee-off burger.

Teams can register at the Humboldt RCMP detachment on 11th Avenue or e-transfer the registration fees to hfd@humboldt.ca.
