P.A. Minor hockey registration taking place Monday and Tuesday

The return to hockey is already underway in Prince Albert, with several athletes taking to the ice for various camps and training sessions over the last few weeks, but the official kickoff begins Monday and Tuesday with registration.

This year, the process will look a little different according to the new PA Minor Hockey director of operations Tyson Dallman. Usually, it can be done through the Hockey Canada website, but a recent revamp of the site has caused glitches, so this year’s procedure will be done partly online on the PA Minor Hockey website and in person.

Registrations must be filled out online and payment can be made by e-transfer, post-dated cheque, debit, or credit in person this Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 30 and 31, at the Art Hauser Centre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A late registration fee kicks in after Sept.15.

“Hockey prices went up this year in part to help offset funds lost last year, and with the rising price in everything around hockey it was inevitable, but we try to keep the fees as low as we can and we are comparatively low to other centres,” Dallman said.

For example, the U13 registration fees in Prince Albert are $725 if you pay before Sept. 15. The Moose Jaw Minor Hockey website shows fees for the same age group at $890.

Dallman says registrations have been coming in slower than in previous years. He thinks part of the issue could be the glitches in the registration process this year, but also hesitancy from families due to the pandemic. Without any current restrictions in place, he says PA Minor Hockey is planning for a regular season and is excited about some new changes to the board with fresh members. Some of the director of operations duties will be split with executive director Jim Flynn, which will allow Dallman to focus on hockey development for both players and coaches.

“We really want to grow PA Minor hockey from the grassroots level right up through to house league and AAA. We’re looking to recruit and retain more players through their entire minor hockey experience,” Dallman said. “So, we’ll start to work a lot more with coaches to help them understand how to teach young athletes.”
