Stephen King, a teacher who has lived in Beauval since 2013, has some creative ideas if he is elected as an Independent MP later this month.

“Some politicians want to follow the status quo, but very few politicians have a vision for their country,” he said. “I have a vision for Canada.”

Although he is running as an Independent, King wants to form the Canada First Party and explained he has been working with Elections Canada to do so, but didn’t have enough time before the election was called to finalize it. He said he’s already recruited a chief agent, officers and more than 1,000 people have expressed interest to sign up as members.

Among the goals of the Canada First Party is to focus on cutting back foreign aid and refugee spending, providing a 25 per cent income increase to seniors and more money for veterans. The party would also seek to change the criminal justice system to make it fairer for Indigenous Peoples, introduce funding for Indigenous language immersion in elementary schools, as well as stop imports of foreign oil and gas.

“We believe if we only use Canadian energy, we can get our own oil industry back up and running really strong, and have lots of good paying jobs for Canadians to turn the economy around,” King said.

King would also like to build a railway through northern Saskatchewan to provide a means for passenger and freight traffic. He said a railway would address high costs of living and bring jobs to northern residents.

King’s platform also includes major funding increases to the military with a goal of one million personnel. The current size of the military is under 50,000 active and reserve soldiers.

“What we are going to do to fix these roads in the North, is we’re going to train the military people how to do the paving,” he said. “We are going to provide them with all of the machinery and all of the materials they need, and then people will be paving their own roads. I want to pave all these roads in the North.”

So far, King has already visited communities such as La Ronge, La Loche and Meadow Lake with more planned stops in the coming weeks. He noted the vast majority of people he spoke to like his ideas because they haven’t heard of ideas like his before.

King has a 60-point platform available to constituents on the Canada First Party website. Other points on the list include a new environmental policy, rolling back Liberal firearm restrictions and having 5G cellphone towers taken down until they are proven to be safe to humans.

The 2021 Canadian federal election is Sept. 20.
