‘An evening with Theo Fleury’ cancelled

Former NHL star Theoren Fleury will not be coming to Prince Albert next month.

The Catholic Family Services (CFS) announced that ‘An Evening With Theo Fleury’ scheduled for Oct. 15 has been cancelled.

In a media release, the CFS said it appreciates Fleury’s advocacy for mental health and those who have experienced sexual abuse, trauma and addictions.

“However, it is with deep regret that our Board of Directors has been forced to make the difficult decision to cancel this event. This has come about as we became aware of disturbing messages that Theo Fleury has been posting on social media. These messages do not align with the beliefs and values of Catholic Family Services. We cannot in good conscience move forward with this event.”

Recently, Fleury made comments on his Twitter page regarding vaccine passports.

In one of the posts, which has since been deleted, Fleury said that vaccine passports would be used by pedophiles to track children. He also attacked the federal government in another post accusing them of “medical tyranny”.

Following the tweets, Brandon University, which granted Fleury an honorary doctorate in 2015, issued a statement saying his remarks have put “a stain on his legacy.”

“We call on Fleury to recognize that he is now a person in a position of authority, and to recognize that his actions as an authority put him in a place where he can cause harm to others.” the statement reads. “We hope he takes advantage of the resources at his disposal and seeks greater understanding of the science behind the pandemic and the essential public health role of vaccines.”

The CFS said that those who purchased tickets for the event will be contacted by the E.A. Rawlinson Centre to be reimbursed.
