It was a big weekend for volleyball, and high school athletics in general, at both John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) and North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) over the weekend.

The JPII junior boys, and junior girls’ teams each took home a gold medal in Wilkie, while the senior boys won silver in Meadow Lake. Across town, the NBCHS senior girls also made the podium, with a bronze medal at their home tournament, to kick off the season.

Principal at NBCHS, Jay Nichol said it was great to be able to host the first tournament of the season for the senior girls.

“It was great to be able to use our facility and see all the teams that came to participate, with lots of spectators too,” he said. “We were happy to see everyone following the COVID protocols, and just being able to come and enjoy all the great volleyball going on.”

The weekend marked the first sports tournament in two years for each of the local high schools, after all school athletics were cancelled last year, due to the pandemic.

Athletic director at JPII, Vic Stynsky said it was something special just to see the school’s teams get to return to action, to play the game they enjoy.

“It was excellent; really great to see our athletes and coaches out on the court over the weekend, and not only were they successful, but I know there were a lot of smiling faces and a lot of happy people that they were back doing athletics,” he said.

“A big part of our school is building community, and through athletics, I think that really puts a lot of pride and a lot of community into our school,” Stynsky added. “So being able to have our students participate again and represent our school is just awesome to see.”
