MP Vidal wins re-election campaign in Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River

In his second federal election in two years, incumbent Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River MP Gary Vidal has once again secured a seat in the House of Commons as the representative of his riding.

As the ballots poured in on Monday night, Vidal built a commanding lead early with nearly 60 per cent of the votes going in his favour.

As the night progressed and a majority of polling stations reported their numbers, Vidal maintained his hold on the lead with almost half of votes counting toward the incumbent MP’s re-election.

Vidal’s campaign after two years in office increased his support across the riding. His share of votes saw a noticeable jump from his 2019 run as the MP earned an approximate 10 per cent rise from the previous campaign.

When asked about what he thinks the increase in support said about his representation, Vidal said it demonstrates an appreciation for his effort to represent all of the residents in his riding, regardless of who they cast their ballot for.

“I’m ecstatic with the support that people have shown me tonight. I think it’s reward for the work my team and I have done over the last two years,” he said.

“I think it says that people appreciate the fact that somebody is willing to represent everyone in this diverse riding regardless of where they come from.”

“As a member of parliament, your job is to represent everybody, and I believe my team and I have done that.”

Vidal and the Conservative Party fell short of their goal of securing control of the House of Commons as the Liberals were projected to form a minority government early in the night.

At the time of publishing, both the Liberal Party and Conservative Party were projected to close out the election with the same number of seats from the 2019 campaign.

Vidal believes this is an indication that Canadians want their federal representatives to continue working for Canadians on a more unified front between parties, rather than unopposed with a majority government.

“I think you always have to appreciate democracy. We have a great country, you always have to respect the wishes of the people,” he said.

“I think the message to representatives from all parties was that people expect us to work together to get results for Canadians.”

With Vidal gaining a majority of the riding’s support, the remaining votes were split among the other candidates with nearly 25 per cent of the riding in favour of newly-appointed Liberal candidate Buckly Belanger. Another 18 per cent was in support of Harmonie King with the NDP and less than 10 per cent were favour of other candidates.

While more half of the riding’s population didn’t choose to elect Vidal, he believes his track record is an indication of his intent to represent all of the people in his riding regardless of their political preference.

“We’ll continue to represent them, will continue to advocate for them. I’m just proud to stand on our record and commit to keep doing the same.”

Official results are expected to be announced throughout the week.
