2021 BBEX awards event postponed

Sep 22, 2021 | 5:10 PM

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce is announcing this year’s Battlefords Business Excellence Awards [BBEX] event is being postponed due to the impact from the COVID-19 situation.

Chief operating officer Linda Machniak said the BBEX committee came to the decision after deliberating on the issue.

“It was a very difficult decision,” she said. “The committee had some really good discussions, and some soul searching if you will, I think. [They] ultimately came to the recommendation to the board that they look to postpone it for this year, and come back bigger and better next year.”

The chamber’s aim is to allow businesses the time they need to deal with the current challenges related to the pandemic. The chamber also wants to focus on being available to support its members in case they need any help along the way.

“There are lots of things on the plates of business people right now, with the pandemic, vaccines, the passport — and all of the work that is to come down the pipe,” Machniak said. “There is staffing, and any number of issues that businesses are facing. Part of the process is that there has to be a fair amount of time invested in a package to make the [BBEX] program the best it can be, and to really recognize the work of the businesses.”

Machniak said the 2021 BBEX awards will instead be held at a date in 2022.

Scholarship deadline coming up

The chamber will still award the Stan Wychopen Memorial BBEX Scholarship program for 2021.

The scholarship is awarded through North West College to a student enrolled in a business program who has recently graduated from a Battlefords area high school.

The chamber contributes $1,000 for its part for the award.

“Right now the Saskatchewan government is matching those scholarship contributions, so the students could have a $2,000 grant,” Machniak said.

Monday, Oct. 4 is the deadline at the college for students to apply for the scholarship.
