Triple-A Stars to open season in Yorkton this weekend

Sep 23, 2021 | 3:09 PM

The Battlefords Triple-A Stars will open their regular season this weekend with a back-to-back versus the Yorkton Maulers at Westland Arena in Yorkton.

Puck drop Saturday will be at 2 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start time Sunday to close out the weekend series.

Head coach of the Stars, Dale Grayston said following training camp and four preseason tune-up games, he likes where the team is at heading into opening weekend.

“I think we’re on track, there was an evaluation process where we had to kind of figure things out with a few guys away that missed some of the games, but we finally have all 20 players back together, and now we can start building and we’re ready for the year.”

Although the Stars won just one of their four preseason games, the coach said just getting all their bodies back in time for the season opener, with 13 rookies and seven league veterans, the team looks to have a good mix this season of youthful enthusiasm and veteran savvy.

Third-year vet, Kobie Anderson led the team with two goals, three points, and 14 penalty minutes through the exhibition schedule, while fellow third-year Triple-Aer, Jakin Lawrence – who spent the last two seasons with Swift Current – also notched three points (all assists).

Knowing full-well the importance of hockey development from the grassroots level, Grayston was also pleased to point out that 10 of the 20 players to make the opening night roster honed their craft locally, through the Battlefords Minor Hockey ranks.

“We’re an area team, and although we have the province to choose from, we want to make sure every young guy who plays in our area has an opportunity to play if they have the skills to do so,” he said. “We’re looking forward to a 44-game schedule this year after only getting to play three last year, and everyone’s pretty excited to get back at it.”

Following the weekend road trip, the Stars will return to North Battleford for their home-opener next Wednesday, Sept. 29. Puck drop at the ACC Wednesday will be at 7:30 p.m.
