A trio of Nipawin Hawks have been rewarded for playing key roles in their 3-0 record early on this season.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League announced their first weekly player awards for the 2021-22 season. Saskatoon product Evan Bortis was named the defenceman of the week. The third-year Hawk had two goals in the first two games and an assist in wins over the La Ronge Ice Wolves. He added another point in a 4-1 Nipawin win over Flin Flon Tuesday night.

Phil Laberge was named the rookie of the week by the league after the Blainville, Que. born winger scored in his SJHL debut Friday and added three assists in a 5-4 Nipawin victory. The 18-year-old chipped in with three more assists Saturday to jump out to an early lead in the SJHL scoring race.

St. Brieux’s Andrew Schaab was named the runner-up for player of the week.
