Melfort McDonald’s helped raise $1,466 for the Ronald McDonald House charities (RMHC) and other local children’s charities on McHappy Day.

McHappy Day is an annual event held by McDonald’s across Canada. Through the purchase of any menu item, McDonald’s donated a portion of the proceeds to charity.

Supervisor for the Melfort McDonald’s, Gaurav Kumar, said that the proceeds go towards the Ronald McDonald House which for some children is a home away from home.

“It’s kind of a hotel which is close to children’s hospitals in bigger cities. If a child and parent want to stay in the city, they can stay in the Ronald McDonald House. They get food and get to stay close to the hospital whenever they want to see their kids. Some are actually located in the hospital.” Kumar said.

Kumar said that they had to push back this year’s McHappy Day in response to the pandemic.

“Last year, unfortunately, we didn’t have the event. Originally it was supposed to be done in May but because of COVID things were changing so much. So we did it in September.” Kumar said.

The first McHappy Day started back in 1977. Since the first event, McDonald’s across the country has since raised over $66 million.

This year in addition to donating a portion of their proceeds from menu items, McDonald’s also sold paper hearts for 2 dollars and McDonald’s branded socks for 5 dollars. McHappy Day guests could also round up their purchase to the nearest dollars.

McHappy Day also celebrates the work that owners and operators, as well as restaurant staff, provide for the RMHC. This includes 10 cents per happy meal, RMHC cookie sales, coin box, round up options and volunteering.

Saskatoon is home to the Ronald McDonald House located across from the Royal University Hospital. They have had over 1,700 stays since they opened.

Prince Albert has a Ronald McDonald Family Room located in the Victoria Hospital. They have helped to support over 3,600 families since they opened.
