Big Brothers Big Sisters in Humboldt hosted their annual awards on September 29th to honour those in the program.

Morgan Forster, mentoring program coordinator, said the event is to celebrate those who work year-round to make the program successful.

“It’s our yearly awards night, it’s to take time to celebrate our mentors and volunteers within our organization. Companies and Businesses around town who are big supporters.” Forster said.

The event was celebrated by giving two members of the organization recognition awards. Jane Albers received the Tyler Bieber Mentor of the Year and Aerionna Fischer received the Brody Hinz Youth of the Year.

September marks Big Brothers Big Sisters month across Canada. The month recognizes the importance of the organization and the work they do for youth.

The program allows for a mentor and a youth the chance to do activities they both enjoy.

“They go out in the community,” Forster said. “It’s just going out and having fun. Spending quality time together. Doing things they both enjoy.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters match youth who are facing adversity in any area in life with a trained adult for one-on-one mentoring.

Forster said that the matching process is the most important step to ensure successful partnerships.

“We look at the families, personality, values, and things they enjoy. Then we do a best-fit match. We try to match them with the kids who have been on the waitlist for the longest amount of time but best fit generally does trump exactly how long they have been on the waitlist.” Forster said.

The waitlist for youth to be put into a match is on average 2 years but some applicants wait up to 3 years. The age most youth are matched is at 10-years-old.
