NBCHS Vikings set to host Evan Hardy Collegiate

As the smoke clears in the Battlefords, North Battleford Comprehensive High School is set for a critical football game.

The NBCHS Vikings host their fourth of five regular season games tonight, taking on Evan Hardy Collegiate out of Saskatoon. After their first three contests, the Vikings sit 2-1 on the year and are looking to get back on track following a 24-0 defeat last week at the hands of Bishop James Mahoney.

Head Coach Mike Humenny said despite the shutout loss, the coaching staff was largely pleased with the way the team played, especially on defence. Even though they were shutout, he said they were able to execute a number of offensive concepts.

“A lot of the things we did in that game were more mental than physical,” he said. “So our focus this week was being much more physically ready to play.”

The squad also made a few special teams adjustments over the past few days.

“Our kicking and punting game wasn’t where we wanted it to be, so we’ve worked on that too,” Humenny said.

NBCHS has had success against this week’s opponent Evan Hardy in the past. Humenny said they’re not a large squad, but are well coached and athletic, with good players on both sides of the ball.

“Their quarterback is their starting safety as well, so he’s a pretty good athlete,” Humenny said. “As he goes, their offence goes.”

If the Vikings can get the win, this will help put them back on track in jockeying for playoff positioning in the coming weeks. Humenny said he’s confident their chances especially with recent performances from defensive players like Grade 12 lineman Layne Watts.

“He played really well last week and will continue to play well this week,” Humenny said.

And this week’s work during practice should pay off in a more well-rounded approach offensively.

“We’ve ran the ball well, but our focus is a group effort to get our pass game back on track,” Humenny said.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. This will be the team’s last regular season home game, as they are on the road next week in Prince Albert.
