Hawks comeback to clip Wings in Warman

The Nipawin Hawks are back in the win column after a 3-2 overtime victory over Weyburn on Wednesday at the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Showcase in Warman.

After the team opened the season with four straight wins, the club had dropped two straight including a 7-4 loss Monday to the Notre Dame Hounds.

The showdown with the Red Wings didn’t appear to be headed in the right direction either. Weyburn took a 2-0 lead in the second period on a pair of power-play goals. Nipawin battled back in the third getting goals from Christian Albertson and Carter Wickenheiser tying the game at 2-2 and forcing overtime. Dawson Brace scored the winner for Nipawin, who improve to 5-2 on the season.

Albertson leads the team with five goals, Wickenheiser’s goal was his first in the SJHL and Brace’s overtime tally was the second of his rookie year.

“We kept to it, we didn’t have much puck luck in the first and second. We kept playing hard, kept to our game, and it paid off,” Brace said after the game. “We just knew to keep working and pucks were going to go in.”

Chase Hamm wasn’t busy in the Nipawin net, as he only saw 16 shots. The Saskatoon product made 14 stops for his fourth win of the year.

“It was great. After losing a couple of games, it feels great to bounce back and have a real good team win,” he added.

The Hawks will now be off until after the Thanksgiving long weekend. The team’s next action is Oct. 12 at the Centennial Arena against the Flin Flon Bombers.

The Hawks also announced on Oct. 5 that the team has acquired Braxton Buckberger from the Blackfalds Bulldogs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Buckberger hails from Saskatoon, and was a draft pick of the Hawks in 2018. He dressed in one game in 2018-19 registering an assist. The 18-year-old will likely make his Hawks debut against the Bombers.
