Local golfer medals at ACAC Championship, qualifies for nationals

After a successful first year competing in post-secondary golf, Colby Friedrich is set for a cross-country trip to compete for a national championship.

The North Battleford product and his teammates at Medicine Hat College (MHC) took home golf medals over the weekend in the men’s, women’s and mixed team categories at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship. This qualifies them to compete at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship in Windsor, Ont. next week. MHC’s performance was wholly dominant, beating the favourite Southern Alberta Institute of Technology by 10 strokes in the men’s competition.

“A few things to touch up, but really happy with how our team performed,” Friedrich said.

On an individual basis, Friedrich was named to the All-Conference team and finished second, shooting even par and winding up three strokes back of fellow MHC Rattler Jayden Dudas.

“I gave myself a chance to win the last round and ultimately lost to my friend and teammate,” he said. “Now, I feel that come nationals, both I and our team have a pretty good chance of competing for [the podium].”

The Rattlers will leave for Ontario on Sunday morning and will tee off for the first of four days of competition on Oct. 12. Friedrich said Sunday will be a long one for travel and not seeing the course before will present some challenges, compared to courses they’ve played on during ACAC competition.

“We’re going to have to learn it quickly,” he said. “Hopefully everyone plays well.”

And that’s something that Friedrich is confident in. He mentioned how grateful both he and his teammates are for the opportunity to compete this season and that they’ve been building up to this moment.

“I think we’re all excited to go to Windsor and try to repeat our performance and bring some hardware back to Medicine Hat.”

More information on the championship is available online.
