Fall into Winter event going to support rescue dogs and cats

North East SPCA is raising some much needed funds at their annual Fall into Winter event on October 30.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Kerry Vickar Centre. There will be 40 vendors at the event, ranging from entrepreneurs to well-known companies.

Sue Amundrud, the organizer of the trade show, says these fundraisers are vital as the shelter runs almost entirely on donations.

“People need to know that this place is run primarily by donations and fundraising,” Amundrud said.

Pat Rumberger, a member of the volunteer fundraising committee, said the government does not provide any assistance to rescue animals.

“There are absolutely no government grants for rescues. There are very few grants out in the world that relate to animals,” Rumberger told northeastNOW.

Christine Baptist, the shelter’s manager, explained that all funds raised support operating expenses.

“Food, medical supplies and our regular bills. To spay and neuter the pets we get in here is way greater than our adoption fee,” Baptist said.

In addition to monetary donations, the shelter is looking for the following items:

• Kitty litter;
• PC nutrition first puppy and adult dog food;
• Pine-Sol;
• Laundry detergent that are HE (High efficiency laundry detergent);
• Bounce sheets;
• Dishwasher tablets.

A volunteer coordinator and volunteers are also needed for the North East SPCA.

“A volunteer coordinator would organize all the volunteers who come to the shelter and help out, finding more volunteers for our fosters or our front desk,” Baptist said.

The North East SPCA website provides an application form for those interested in volunteering. There are positions for folding laundry, cleaning cat rooms, assisting with fundraisers, transporting animals to vet appointments or another SPCA, walking dogs, and other opportunities to help continue offering a variety of services to the public.

For communities that want to access services offered by North East SPCA, they must first support the organization.

“We only have a few rural municipalities and towns that support us. It would be great if more could support us. I get lots of calls from stray animals from different places and without them supporting us we can’t take the animals unfortunately,” Baptist said.

In addition to the Chase the Ace fundraiser in conjunction with NEOSS held every Thursday, the North East SPCA is also hosting a weekend fundraising auction on Facebook beginning on Oct. 8 running until Oct. 11.
