North Stars looking to extend win streak against Broncos
The Battlefords North Stars are looking to maintain the momentum of a strong week of play when they return to home ice tonight.
A three-game winning streak is what the Stars carry into tonight’s contest with the visiting Humboldt Broncos, an opponent that the Stars began the current streak with last week in a 6-3 victory. Since then, the squad has put up an onslaught of offence, with 9-5 and 6-5 victories at the SJHL Showcase, for average of seven goals a game during this winning streak. With a 5-1-1 record, the team sits tied with Melfort atop the league with 11 points.
A key factor is the depth that head coach Brayden Klimosko has to work with. Seven players are currently above point-a-game pace and 16 different players have scored after just seven regular season games. Tops on the list for the Stars are forwards Jake Southgate and Steven Kesslering with 11 and 10 points respectively, Southgate sitting tied for third in the SJHL.
Their opponents from Humboldt sit second behind the Stars in the division, with a 4-2 record after six games. While the Stars got the better of them last week, the Broncos have posted a slightly better goal differential at this point of the season and have three scorers in double digits. Humboldt’s leading scorer, centre Connor McGrath, is currently second in the league with 13 points.
