Meadow Lake RCMP advising community of online crime reporting system

The Meadow Lake RCMP detachment is advising the public of an online reporting system that could improve efficiency with local enforcement.

Police consistently encourage their respective communities to report any suspicious incidents to authorities. This is because when an arrest is made, any incidents directly related to a suspects criminal activity can be linked to the individual, building a stronger case for it and when the suspect appears in court.

However, when these reports are filed in person, sometimes they can occupy officers who are on duty, which could hinder their ability to respond to other calls for service in the community.

Meadow Lake RCMP Commander Ryan How stated utilizing the online reporting system can help free up RCMP members to respond to more pressing criminal investigations.

“This program will make it very easy for the public to report minor crimes quickly and efficiently without having to call or come to the detachment,” he said.

“The Meadow Lake RCMP Detachment is extremely busy with many administrative tasks every day, and front counter and phone reporting ties up resources which draws from investigating serious criminal matters.”

The online reporting system is not meant to be used for incidents where a witness or suspect is involved. Any lost or stolen items involving personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals are also meant to be reported to police in person.

Incidents that can be reported include thefts, lost or found property or damage to property or vehicles under $5,000. Any crimes that occur in the Saskatchewan RCMP’s jurisdiction are also eligible to be reported online.

How explained the RCMP believes this system will improve efficiency with police reporting, adding the Meadow Lake detachment has received more than 2,500 calls for service since July 1.

“A portion of these fall within the online reporting criteria which usually requires a police file number for insurance purposes. With the use of online reporting, an RCMP member or our front office staff wont be required to dedicate their time to these more minor crimes,” he stated.

“The online reporting is managed remotely which frees up detachment resources. The benefits to the public are that it is quick and easy and can be done at their convenience.”
