Melfort Curling Club 2021/22 league calendar set, registration now open

Oct 14, 2021 | 12:26 PM

The league calendar is set and registration is now open, as curling season is right around the corner in Melfort.

Club manager, Gerald Macgillivray said that quite a few teams have already confirmed that they are coming back this year, however, there still aren’t a lot of other teams registered. If people are new or have yet to register it’s quite the simple process.

“Whenever they want to phone, I’m here all the time, so they just have to phone,” MacGillivray told northeastNOW.

And overall, although the season has yet to begin, MacGillivray said that he’s quite excited about returning to curl and hopes that they can have a full season, especially considering the bitter disappointment of how last season had to be shut down.

“It’s been a long time you know,” said Macgillivray. “It’s been nine months since we’ve last curled. It was a pretty short season last year, especially for all the work we had to do to put the ice in and then we were only able to curl for a month and a half. Hopefully, we can go all year this time around.”

As for how the leagues will look this year, Macgillivray said that they will be the same as they were last year, however, to join them there are and will be some new COVID-19 rules and regulations.

“We have the same leagues that we had last year,” said Macgillivray. “We have Monday and Tuesday night Rec leagues, Super League (Cash League) Thursday night, Seniors League is Tuesdays and Thursdays in the daytime and then there’s High School curling and Junior curling on Wednesday nights.”

“To play in our leagues this year, you have to be fully vaccinated, even to come into the building, and right now there’s a mask mandate, but the big thing is that you have to be fully vaccinated,” said MacGillivray.

For the Club, they currently don’t have any tournaments or open ice times set in stone on the schedule, however, MacGillivray said that they are working on booking some bonspiels and that there should be no problem in having open ice times for practice.

“We don’t have any tournaments or bonspiels scheduled this year, but we’ll definitely have our Senior Open, probably the first week in March, whatever that date is and we usually try to have another one,” said MacGillivray. “TJ’s Pizza we’re hoping to have and some other ones as well if they come along.”

“We always try to have open ice times, we just don’t have dates for that yet, but there’s definitely always time if people want to come out and practice and then we can set up a schedule for that.”

For now, the club is working on flooding the ice this week, as the first night of curling, this year will be Nov. 1, with the Monday league starting it off.
