Hawks hit the highway for three game road trip

The Nipawin Hawks will embark on a three-game road trip beginning Friday in Weyburn against the Red Wings.

Coming off a 2-1 loss to the Flin Flon Bombers Tuesday at home, the team will head to the southern portion of the province for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

The trip will also mark the first overnight trip for the group who sports a 5-3 record, good enough for third in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) Sher-Wood Division. Assistant coach Tad Kozun said the players will need to prepare for the most grueling trip of the season to date.

“We just have to get them ready,” he said. “We need to make sure they are feeling good, doing the right things. Three games in three days are always tough.”

The Hawks clipped the Red Wings 3-2 in overtime earlier this year at the SJHL Showcase in Warman. The team meets Estevan Saturday for the first time this season and on Sunday Nipawin meets Notre Dame in Wilcox. The Hounds outpaced the Hawks 7-4 earlier this month, also at the Showcase in Warman. Kozun said the trip is a great way for the team to bond and get to know each other, but the six points up for grabs are crucial.

“It’s fun to get on the road with the guys, get out of your billets house and just away from Nipawin for a few days with the guys. It will be good, we just have to prepare right and make sure we’re ready to rock and roll,” Kozun added.

Faceoff for Friday and Saturday’s games is at 7:30 p.m., Sunday’s matinee affair in Wilcox is slated to start at 4:30 p.m. All three games can be heard on Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio starting with the pregame show 15 minutes prior to puck drop.
