Vikings fall to Marauders, playoffs set

Oct 18, 2021 | 9:00 AM

After a tough road loss to end the regular season, the North Battleford Comprehensive Football team can at least focus on the postseason knowing that the worst of their play is likely behind them.

After a solid home victory a week earlier, the NBCHS Vikings fell to St. Mary in Prince Albert, 35-12. Friday’s loss drops the Vikings to 3-2 on the year.

The Marauders opened the scoring with a touchdown on their first series and held a narrow 14-10 lead at halftime after Jackson Geddes scored on an eight-yard run. However, turnovers became frequent in the 2nd Half and Prince Albert was able to capitalize.

In an email to battlefordsNOW, head coach Mike Humenny said the Vikings played well at times, but weren’t able to ultimately get the job done when they needed to score.

“Our defense played physically all game, but our biggest issue was not finishing drives on offense,” he said. “We were able to move the ball, but just couldn’t put it in the end zone.”

First up for the Vikings in playoff action is Aden Bowman from Saskatoon, who NBCHS defeated 14-7 in their season opener. Humenny said in finishing the regular season at 3-2, the coaching staff is largely happy with how the squad is playing. However, playing in the postseason will require a different level of execution.

“We did some good things against PA, but we need to be ready for Aden Bowman,” he said. “They are well coached and have good players on the line of scrimmage.”

“We will have a good week of practice and be ready for Friday night.”

The league semi-final will take place in Saskatoon at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. Should the Vikings win, they will play for the 5A City Championship on October 29.
