The Nipawin Hawks needed a strong performance from their starting netminder Sunday afternoon in Notre Dame if the club hoped to snap a three-game losing streak.

They got one in Chase Hamm who made 38 saves for his first career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) shutout in a 3-0 Nipawin win over the Hounds to keep the team above .500.

Notre Dame hadn’t played since Wednesday and showed no rust in the opening period firing 12 shots on Hamm. The 19-year-old Saskatoon product kept the game scoreless allowing rookie centreman Jake Smith to open a 1-0 lead with his first career SJHL goal in the first period.

Hamm made another dozen stops in the second period and 14 more in the final frame to record his fifth win of the season.

He said his performance feels great after allowing four goals in two periods in Weyburn on Friday.

“It was kind of a tough weekend; it didn’t get off to the start we wanted. Obviously getting a shutout feels really good,” he said after the game.

Braxton Buckberger also scored his first career SJHL goal in the game, the 18-year-old out of Saskatoon scored in the second period opening a two-goal lead. He added his second of the game in the third to seal the Hawks sixth win of the season. Hamm said returning with some points on the weekend was important to the team.

“Yes, for sure, getting zero points in a six-point weekend, that’s not what you want,” he said.

Nipawin had 28 shots on Notre Dame’s goal, Ryley Osland suffered the loss in Notre Dame’s net.

The Hawks are now off until Friday when they host the Kindersley Klipper at the Centennial Arena. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m.
