Hawks set for high flying weekend with Klippers

The Nipawin Hawks return to action Friday at the Centennial Arena with a visit from the Kindersley Klippers.

Nipawin is coming off a 3-0 win in Notre Dame last Sunday, a win that curtailed a three-game losing streak and kept the team with a winning percentage above .500. Head coach Doug Johnson said the team bounced back admirably to salvage three games in three days road trip.

“Three in three and some guys played a lot more minutes than we had wanted, but what I was happy with we didn’t beat ourselves. We finally played an intelligent game and did some things offensively to win. That’s what we need to do, if we don’t beat ourselves, we’re going to win a lot more games,” Johnson said.

Hawks netminder Chase Hamm made 38 saves for the win and his first career shutout on Sunday. Johnson said the team was asking for a big night from the 19-year-old Saskatoon product.

“We’re very proud of his performance and happy he came through like that,” Johnson said. “We challenged him a little bit after the Weyburn game (4-2 loss). Starters need to be able to stop the bleeding, there is times that they just need to come in and say ‘hey, I got this guys, we’re going to win this’.”

Nipawin will meet the Klippers for the first time this season, the clubs will finish the back end of a home-and-home series on Saturday in Kindersley. The Hawks sit with a record of 6-5 on the year, good enough for sixth overall in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) standings. The Klippers are 4-7 and sit at eighth.

Johnson said he expects the Klippers to play a hard-nosed game, but he’s not concerned with the visitors gameplan.

“We’re looking forward to it, we want to make sure we get up and down the ice and make sure they are chasing us as much as possible and when we don’t have the puck, we’re hounding it and eliminating time and space. Just a Hawks hockey game,” he said.

Nipawin has some good news on the injury front with Carson Dobson and Mkyllan Couture will return from injuries. Newcomer Kye Whillans will make his Nipawin debut wearing number 20. Johnson said the trio will provide a boost for the club that has struggled to score offensively. Johnson said although the manpower is welcomed the result will be because of their work ethic and not the opponent.

“With the team that we have, I’m not concerned what other teams bring. We talk a little about the opposition everyday but like I said earlier, we can’t beat ourselves,” he said.

Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. both nights, COVID protocols remain in place for people coming to the arena.
