Southgate’s pair lead North Stars to 5-3 victory in Melville

The Battlefords North Stars took home their third straight victory Friday night in Melville, topping the Melville Millionaires, 5-3.

Forwards Jake Southgate (two goals, one assist) and Holden Doell (three assists), led the way for the team; while Wilson Steele, Ryland McNinch and Tanner Klimpke also chipped in on the scoring.

In goal, Ulrik Roussel made 35 saves on 38 shots-against on the night, to earn the victory.

At the other end, Melville’s Nic Porterfield scored his first two goals of the season, while Charles-Thomas Larochelle added a goal and two assists as well, and goalie Alexis Giroux stopped 40 of 45 shots against in the loss.

Both netminders stole the show with perfect play through a scoreless first period, making 10 (Roussel) and 15 (Giroux) saves respectively, before Porterfield’s first then made it 1-0 Millionaires just under two minutes into the second.

McNinch’s sixth of the season tied the game midway through the middle frame on a quick-release wrister in front, capitalizing off a Melville turnover, to make it 1-1, followed by Steele’s first career SJHL tally a minute later, which flipped the lead entirely, to 2-1 Stars.

After Larochelle’s first made it a 2-2 game after two periods, the scene was set for a winner-take-all third period.

Coming out of the second intermission, Southgate answered the bell quickly for his team, scoring his first of the game just under a minute into the third period to put the Battlefords ahead 3-2.

Klimpke’s third of the campaign would serve as the eventual game winner, making it 4-2 off a backdoor tap-in provided by a cross-crease pass by Keiton Klein, with Southgate’s second extending the lead to 5-2 for good measure just a few minutes later at the 12:04 mark of the third.

While Porterfield’s second cut his team’s deficit to two on a power play goal in the final minute, that is as close as the Millionaires would come; 5-3 North Stars, the final.

With the victory, the Battlefords improve to 8-3-1 on the season, while Melville fall to 1-5-4.

The North Stars will return to action Saturday night versus the Yorkton Terriers in Yorkton. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 93.3 The Rock. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
