Powerplay trouble hinders Hawks

The Nipawin Hawks were blanked 3-0 Saturday against Kindersley on the strength of three Klipper shorthanded goals.

Following a scoreless first period, Kindersley opened the scoring not even a minute into the second period while Nipawin was on the powerplay, Ethan King scored his first goal of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season. The Klippers Noah Lindsay added his fifth goal of the year at 12:26 of the second.

Chase Friedt-Mohr capped the scoring with a shorthanded empty-net goal while Nipawin netminder Chase Hamm was on the bench for the extra attacker with 26 seconds to play. Hamm made 19 saves in the loss.

Kindersley goaltender Matthew Pesenti picked up the shutout making 27 stops. Pesenti was the winning goalie Friday night as well in a 4-3 Klippers victory over Nipawin in a shootout.

The Hawks had seven powerplay opportunities, Kindersley was 0/6 with their chances on the man-advantage.

Nipawin has a record 6-6-0-1 and sits in sixth place in the SJHL standings. The team’s next action is Tuesday in Melville against the Millionaires. Faceoff is 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio beginning with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m.
