How Halloween will be celebrated in the northeast

With the COVID pandemic at an all-time high in Saskatchewan, here is information about trick-or-treating and events taking place in the northeast.

Although the pandemic affected Halloween celebrations worldwide, northeastern communities are offering guidelines for trick-or-treating to both candy givers and recipients.

In the Village of Lake Lenore, Halloween will be celebrated starting at 3 p.m on Oct. 31. Despite no official restrictions, the village strongly urges both trick-or-treaters and those handing out candy to wear masks. If not participating, residents are encouraged to hang a sign reading ‘No Trick or Treat.’

On Friday, Oct. 29, the Village of Quill Lake will celebrate Halloween. Kids will be able to trick-or-treat after their school day ends. Village officials announced on Facebook that they would be posting information around town about the changes.

Bruno Town Hall will also celebrate Halloween on Oct. 29. Candy will be handed out from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Outside the town office, but residents are encouraged to go door-to-door on Oct. 31.

The Towns of Wadena and St. Brieux will celebrate Halloween on Oct. 31. Both towns encourage hand washing, masking, and social distancing. Trick-or-treating times have been suggested for both towns from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. respectively.

Tisdale, Nipawin and Melfort’s Halloween celebration will take place on October 31. Currently, there is no suggestion for trick-or-treating hours or restrictions.

Glenn George, the mayor of Melfort, said he hopes people will take precautions to stay safe.

“We will leave it up to the parents to make sure that their kids are protected,” he said.

The Government of Saskatchewan has suggested the following guidelines for those handing out candy and trick-or-treating:

  • Stick within your bubble of friends/family
  • Wash hands before enjoying treats
  • Wear a mask while trick-or-treating or handing out treats
  • If you are feeling refrain from trick-or-treating/handing out candy
  • Do not give out candy that is not individually wrapped
