North Battleford’s Twin Rivers Curling Club will host the 2021 CurlSask Curling Club Championships this weekend, Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.

This will be the 12th year of the provincial Curling Club Championships, a unique event that features grassroot to semi-competitive athletes, who have played at a club level regularly – and many of whom serve as the lifeblood of their community curling clubs – whether as volunteers, coaches, ice technicians or youth clinic coordinators; giving them a chance to compete for a national title.

Vice President of the Twin Rivers Curling Club, Doug Fehr, said it’s an exciting time around the club, as this weekend will mark the first larger-scale event they have been able to hold over the last year-and-a-half or so, in addition to being a favourite of many on the curling schedule.

“We’re quite excited about it, as it’s the first event we’ve hosted in a while, but it’s also really exciting to be able to see these types of players, who contribute to grassroots curling at their various clubs, be able to participate in a provincial championship that leads up to a national championship,” Fehr said.

The event will be made up of 10 men’s and nine women’s teams from across Saskatchewan, including one of each who will represent the local curling club.

Cole Tenetuik, who is fresh off a win at the 2021 Provincial Mixed Championship, will skip the local Men’s team, also comprised of Brad Wuitchik, Lindsay Holm and Doug Flasch.

Kristi Frolek will skip the Twin Rivers’ Woman’s team, which also includes Nicole Beausoleil, Carey Hirschfeld and Christy Walker. Together Frolek, Beausoleil and Walker represented Saskatchewan in the 2017 National Championship in Kingston, Ont.

As per CurlSask event policy, all entrants to the Northland Power Curling Centre this weekend will be required to show acceptable proof of vaccination with ID, with spectators also required to wear a mask inside the facility.

Admission is free to attend, with draws beginning at the Northland Power Curling Centre Friday, Oct., 29 at 10 a.m. and continuing at 1:30, 5 and 8:30 p.m.

Action will then resume Saturday with draws at 10 a.m., 1:30, 5 and 8:30 p.m., and Sunday with draws at 10 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m. Action will wrap Monday, Nov. 1, with the final playoff draws at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Winners from the Curling Club Championships this weekend, will advance to participate in the National Championship, Nov. 28 to Dec. 4, in Ottawa, Ont.
