Hawks look to withdraw two points from Millionaires

The Nipawin Hawks will look to regain their flight on the road in Melville Tuesday night.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League club is coming off a 3-0 loss Saturday in Kindersley against the Klippers. All three of Kindersley’s goals came shorthanded including an empty net goal while starter Chase Hamm was on the bench for the extra attacker. Head Coach Doug Johnson said frustration is starting to boil over.

“It’s very disappointing, I know a lot of the guys that are on the powerplay are upset and rightfully so. We need to start working together as a team and make sure everyone is doing their part to be the team we all know we can be,” Johnson said.

The Hawks have struggled scoring goals over the past six games, the club has generated just 10 goals. Nipawin sits with a record of 6-6-0-1 and in seventh place. Johnson said the work continues to find more goals.

“We had a good skate Monday and worked on a few things that we needed to work on,” he said. “More specific areas of the game that we’re not doing a great job of and trying to do some things to generate more offence.”

Tuesday’s contest is the first of four against Melville this year. The Hawks haven’t lost to the Millionaires since the 2015 playoffs, a 2-1 Melville win. The Hawks would go on to win that series. Their last regular season defeat at the hands of the Millionaires is Oct. 31, 2014. Johnson said his team could use that history to get some mojo back.

“We haven’t played our best hockey yet,” he said. “Each team gets on a roll and right now we haven’t gotten on a roll, we’re in that funk where we are beating ourselves. If we can survive this and get on a roll, we’ll be pretty happy.”

Nipawin’s only other action this week is a Saturday home date with Kindersley at the Centennial Arena. Tuesday’s game is 7 p.m. faceoff, you can catch the action on Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio with Nipawin RONA Hawks Hockey starting at 6:45 p.m.
