New Air Ronge bylaw restricting all-terrain vehicles being drafted after complaints
Air Ronge council has decided to move ahead with drafting a new bylaw targeting operators of all-terrain vehicles (ATV).
Discussion of creating the bylaw began at a regular council meeting last week after complaints were received about the unsafe operation of ATVs in the village. Residents have also had concerns about the lack of protective gear worn by riders and the excessive amount of noise being made.
“Council doesn’t want to stop people from using their vehicles much the same way as the snowmobile bylaw,” Administrator Gavin Willins said. “The draft, which will still have to be approved, will be looking at it’s OK to move from A to B as long as you’re going at a cautious, conscientious manner, taking into account the laws of the road and not creating a nuisance in doing so.”
The ATV bylaw will specifically target dirt bikes, trikes, quads and any other off-road utility vehicles. Willins noted the biggest concern are ATVs that are unregistered.
