Remembrance Day services and events in the northeast

Nov 8, 2021 | 2:00 PM

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Remembrance Day services and events will look different this year.

On November 11, 2021 all Canadians are encouraged to take a moment of silence to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

With pandemic restrictions, smaller ceremonies, outdoor services and virtual gatherings are a popular choice for those hoping to remember those who fought for the freedoms we have today.

The Town of Naicam will be holding a short service for those wanting to honour veterans. The service will be held at the Naicam Cenotaph at 10:45 a.m. There will be no indoor ceremony this year.

The Town of Carrot River will also be hosting an outdoor ceremony. The ceremony will take place at the Carrot River Cenotaph starting at 10:30 a.m.

The City of Humboldt will be hosting an outdoor service that will be live-streamed. The service will begin at 11 a.m. at the Humboldt Cenotaph. There will also be a steak supper in the clubroom that is limited to 30 people. For those hoping to attend, you can contact Donald Hoggermann at 306-231-8664.

In the Town of Nipawin, those who want to participate in the outdoor service can go to the Cenotaph at 10:45 a.m. Laying of individual wreaths will be held indoors only for wreath layers and veterans.

Nipawin Legion No. 120 also lowered their flag to half-mast on Nov. 8 to honour National Indigenous Veterans Day.

The Town of Star City will be streaming their service to the public at 10:50 a.m. The in-person service will be held at Elks Hall exclusively for Star City Legion members.

In a previous interview Jim Graham, President of the Royal Canadian Legion Melfort No. 30, said this year’s celebration will look different in response to the pandemic.

“Historically in Melfort, we put on a big program at the high school,” Graham said. “With the Delta variants, we are not comfortable with having a large gathering.”

City of Melfort residents can join the Melfort Legion at Memorial Gardens beginning at 9:45 a.m. The ceremony will feature the laying of the wreath and the lowering of the flag. A small indoor gathering will be held at the Melfort Legion and will be live-streamed beginning at 10:30 a.m.

For those hoping to attend, you will need proof of double vaccination in addition to wearing a mask and following all current public health guidelines.

“Anybody interested can contact me (President Comrade Jim Graham), Comrade Bob Ellis or Comrade John Wade.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the poppy in Canada.

To commemorate the occasion, Legions in the northeast are selling yard signs, commemorative poppies and metal grave markers.
