Two Hawks honoured for strong play

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) made its weekly player award announcement with two Nipawin Hawks being recognized.

Chase Hamm, 19, was named the goaltender of the week Tuesday thanks to a pair of wins over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday and Saturday. The Saskatoon product stopped 28 of 32 shots and three players during a 5-4 shootout win in La Ronge. Hamm wasn’t overly busy at home Saturday but several of his 11 saves were stellar in a 4-0 win.

The second-year Hawk has a record of 7-4-0-2, a goals-against-average of 2.17, a .915 save percentage, and two shutouts, all among the SJHL goaltending leaders.

Nipawin captain Mkyllan Couture had an injury-plagued start to his final season, but the 20-year-old is starting to find his game.

In the two games versus La Ronge on the weekend, the Pilot Butte born Couture scored a goal and added two assists. His strong play on the blueline helped secure the Hawks shutout win at home on Saturday. Couture said after the game on Friday that he is starting to find his rhythm.

“I feel like I’m getting better each week,” he told northeastNOW. “I feel like the whole team is.”

The two awards were the first for any Hawk player since the opening weekend of the season in late September.
