Nipawin Handiworks is smiling thanks to cookie sales

Through the Tim Hortons smile cookie campaign, Nipawin Handiworks continues to bring joy to participants.

On Nov 8, Nipawin Handiworks announced the total from the smile cookie campaign with $5,353 donated to the organization.

Glenda Fairbairn, program co-ordinator at Nipawin Handiworks, said that they have been the recipient of the Nipawin Tim Horton’s smile cookie donation for roughly four years.

“Every year we take on as a challenge to increase our sales and this year is the most we have gotten.”

Nipawin Handiworks is a community-based organization that supports adults with intellectual disabilities. The program aims at giving participants skills through their various programs.

“We have a day program and we run four group homes in the Town of Nipawin,” Fairbairn added. “We have a woodworking area, an independent living program and a vocational day program.”

The focus of the program is integrating participants into the community but the COVID-19 pandemic has limited their ability to do some activities.

The program currently does confidential shredding for Nipawin in addition to woodworking with participants currently building Christmas decorations.

“Depending on the level of functioning, we do tabletop and quality of life activities.”

The money from the smile cookie campaign is used to fund activities and trips for participants that would otherwise not have the opportunity.

“There was 49 of us that went to a Roughrider game two years ago, that was one thing we spent the money on. That was a fairly big bill, Roughly $5,000.”

Participants in the program are currently searching for more opportunities to get involved in the community.

“We are always looking for some ways we can help the community, so keep us in mind.”
