Local businesses supporting Meadow Lake community Christmas campaign

Despite snow covering the city and making roads a little more slicker than desired, one of Meadow Lake’s signature Christmastime campaigns is picking up traction heading into the holiday season.

The Meadow Lake RCMP Youth Advisory Committee’s (YAC) Christmas Community Food and Toy Drive kicked off earlier this month with teams roaming around the neighbourhood looking for sponsors to assist with the campaign.

Nearly halfway through the event, the YAC has announced their sponsors serving as drop-off zones for toys and non-perishable foods.

Until the final day of November, residents and generous guests in Meadow Lake will have the opportunity to provide those in need of a little extra Christmas spirit with donations by visiting any one of several locations.

Meadow Lake Chrysler, Eatery on Main, Fitness Lair Meadow Lake, The Shop, Innovation Credit Union, Solitude and the Co-op Food Store, Liquor Store, Pharmacy and Gas Station will be accepting holiday contributions throughout the remainder of the campaign.

Meadow Lake Properties, Eagle Creek and Schafer Farms are also supporting the cause as cash sponsors.

Carla Silver, speaking on behalf of all owners in The Shop, said the campaign represents an opportunity to come together for a good cause throughout the holiday season.

“It means a lot to us because it’s our community, and in essence, it’s almost like our own families,” she said.

“We are all community members, and we’re always involved with the community. So it’s really important on that level, because it’s like family and helping your own.”

She added The Shop also opted to sponsor an entire family as well. Anyone looking to sponsor a family can do so by contacting Maryah Walker by phone at 306-930-6464.

With the campaign representing a crucial component of the spirit in the season of giving, Silver stated the initiative also bears significance in strengthening the community.

“It’s important for our community to help one another, and I think it’s important that everybody gets to celebrate Christmas or the holidays,” she said.

“Some people don’t want to let people know what’s going on behind the scenes, so I think it’s good that we as a community can go out and help people without drawing attention to them.”

The Christmas Community Food and Toy Drive will run throughout the rest of November with the donations set to be distributed before Christmas Eve.

The YAC will continue supporting the community through initiatives, including the Co-op “Stuff a Cruiser” campaign set to begin on Nov. 20.
